Littlings — A playful learning website that helps children discover Nigeria through stories, languages, games, and creative activities, with opportunities to listen, make, and explore at their own pace.

Littlings is designed for curious children aged 6–12, bringing Nigerian culture into an approachable digital space. Folktales, everyday phrases, landmarks, people, and creative traditions sit alongside interactive activities, giving children different ways to connect with the world around them.

A website for children cannot depend on long explanations and expect curiosity to do the rest. Some children are still developing their reading confidence. Others would rather make something, hear a story, or answer a question than sit through a page of information.

An early version of Littlings also exposed a gap between activity titles and what happened after clicking them. Activities such as colouring Nigeria's map or creating an Ankara pattern led to text downloads. The titles promised something children could do, but the experience stopped before they could begin.

I wanted to close that gap and make Nigerian culture something children could participate in throughout the website.

I organised Littlings into recognisable spaces: Story Village, Language Corner, Game Ground, Creative Corner, and sections for exploring Nigeria's places and people. Each gives a child a clear choice about what to try next.

The visual identity uses bright colours, rounded cards, bold outlines, playful illustrations, and offset shadows. Baloo 2 gives headings a friendly personality, while Nunito keeps longer passages and instructions readable. Cream backgrounds give the stronger colours room without making every part of the page compete for attention.

A major step was turning the creative prompts into dedicated activity pages. Children can choose colours for an illustrated map, combine motifs in an Ankara pattern, customise and play a digital drum, or draw a favourite food. The tools give an immediate response to their choices, so learning happens through doing.

I also wanted reading ability to be less of a barrier. Voice controls let children listen to stories, hear questions and answer options, and adjust narration speed. Supported browsers offer spoken game answers, with a confirmation step before the selected answer is submitted.

The experience remains open to exploration without an account requirement. Children can move between stories, games, and creative tasks, while parents and teachers have introductory guidance on content and activities that benefit from grown-up support.

I worked on the visual identity of the website, the structure of its learning sections, and the interactions that turn content into activities.

As the project developed, my focus expanded from presenting stories and cultural information to creating experiences children could use directly: drawing tools, pattern controls, game feedback, and voice-assisted reading and answering.

Littlings now offers several ways into the same subject. A child can read a folktale, listen to it, explore a related cultural idea, or use a creative activity to make something of their own.

The activity section has moved beyond downloadable prompts into dedicated browser experiences. Stories, games, language cards, and voice controls give children more choice in how they engage, while the visual system keeps the different sections recognisably part of the same world.

The result is a growing cultural learning platform built around participation, with room for both independent discovery and shared moments with a parent or teacher.

Features

A browsable library brings together retold folktales and original stories inspired by Nigerian places and traditions, with story categories and reflection prompts.

Story narration includes pause, resume, replay, and speed controls, supporting children who prefer to listen or follow along as they read.

Phrase cards introduce Nigerian greetings and expressions with meanings and usage notes. Selected phrases have linked pronunciation recordings.

Knowledge quizzes, word matching, true-or-false questions, riddles, counting challenges, and state clues provide different ways to practise and discover.

Children can hear questions and options aloud. Where speech recognition is supported, they can speak an answer and confirm it before submission.

Children choose colours and paint regions of an illustrated Nigeria map, with undo, redo, reset, and save controls.

Colour, motif, and layout choices update a repeating pattern, giving children a way to experiment with contrast and rhythm.

Children change the drum's appearance and tap different areas to play three tones, accompanied by an introduction to talking drums.

Additional pages include food drawing, a neighbourhood observation hunt, and a shadow-puppet stage.

Supporting content introduces the platform's approach and encourages parents and teachers to participate where help is useful.

The learning sections are accessible without creating an account, keeping the starting point simple.
